Maroon Group

This is an entry-level developmental group with a focus on fun and camaraderie through swimming. The emphasis is on perfecting freestyle and backstroke technique and mastering the basics of the butterfly and breaststroke strokes.

Requirements to Enter Maroon Group
Swimmers must be able to complete each of the following:

  •        Swim 50 yards/meters of continuous freestyle demonstrating rotary breathing
  •        Swim 50 yards/meters of continuous legal backstroke
  •        Demonstrate basic butterfly and breaststroke skills
  •        Tread water for 1 minute

Practice Attendance
For regular improvement, swimmers are encouraged to attend all 3 practices offered per week.

Meet Attendance
Swimmers are expected to participate in at least 3 YMCA meets during the short-course season. In addition, swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend any USA Swimming meets recommended by the group coach during both the short and long-course seasons. Swimmers are also expected to attend the highest-level championship meet they qualify for at the end of both the short and long-course seasons.

Goals of the Maroon Group
To be considered for placement into the Green Group, swimmers should be able to complete all of the following:  

  •        Legal in all 4 strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle)
  •        Display a forward racing dive from a starting block
  •        Display an ability to consistently push off underwater and streamline effectively
  •        Display a basic understanding of how a pace clock works and is used

Swimmers ages 11 and older that have not successfully demonstrated all of the goals of the group should enroll in either the Stroke and Turn class or Swim Lesson programs at the YMCA.
